Dhurandhar makers paid veteran Pakistani singer Hasan Jahangir $50,000 (about Rs 45 lakh) to use his famous song Hawa Hawa. The spy thriller, which stars Ranveer Singh and was directed by Aditya Dhar, made extensive use of the iconic song. Hawa Hawa, which was first released in 1987, is one of Hasan Jahangir's most well-known songs and has remained popular for generations.

Pakistani singer recently discussed his career and the resurgence of interest in Hawa Hawa following its inclusion in Dhurandhar during an appearance on Nida Yasir's ARY Digital Ramadan show, Shan-e-Sahoor.

Hasan Jahangir mentioned the song's role in Dhurandhar that did remarkably well at the box office during the discussion. In response to a question about whether he had been paid for the song's use, the Pakistani-based singer acknowledged that the filmmakers had secured his consent and paid him. He said, "Ji hain, makers mein mujhe $50,000 diye. Paise bhi diye aur permission bhi li."

The host went on to specifically highlight the movie Dhurandhar, saying that it was comforting that the singer's consent had been obtained before the song was used. "Pehle copyright system nahi tha. But abhi jo bhi mere gaane use karta hai, woh pehle permission leta hai aur paise bhi deta hai. Hawa Hawa 40 saal pehle aaya tha. Maine usko 1986 mein record kiya tha aur 1987 mein launch kiya tha," Hasan Jahangir said.

Hawa Hawa appeared in the movie when Sanjay Dutt's character, SP Chaudhary Aslam, was introduced. A group of drug dealers were confronted by the cop in this scene, which took place in a barren white desert. One of the film's most memorable opening sequences was the stylised action sequence, which was set to the retro song.

About Dhurandhar 

The first in a two-part film series, Dhurandhar is directed by Aditya Dhar. It narrated the tale of an Indian spy breaking into Pakistan's criminal and political underbelly in Karachi. The 1999 IC-814 hijacking, the 2001 Indian Parliament attack, the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and the circumstances surrounding Operation Lyari were just a few of the real-life incidents involving geopolitical tensions that were interwoven into the plot.

Dhurandhar, which debuted on December 5, became the first Bollywood movie to make over Rs 1000 crore at the domestic box office and earned over Rs 1300 crore internationally. The release date of its sequel is March 19, 2026.
