Govardhan Asrani, who was affectionately called Asrani, died on Monday at the age of 84 after a protracted illness. The late actor's manager confirmed his demise, saying - "Asrani passed away at 3 PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu. He is survived by his wife, sister and nephew." Over the course of his decades-long career, Asrani's memorable roles and comedic timing had a profound effect on generations of Bollywood viewers. Known for leading a simple life, he maintained his modesty despite the fact that his performances delighted millions of people. On social media, a number of Bollywood celebrities paid their heartfelt tribute to him. Joining them, Salman Khan and Hema Malini have also expressed their grief on X (previously Twitter).

Salman Khan shared a picture of the veteran actor and expressed his 'sadness'. He wrote, "Saddened to hear of Asrani Ji’s demise. A true legend of laughter. #RIP."

Hema Malini shared a photo of herself and Asrani together, where they both smiled and posed for the camera. In Sholay, Asrani portrayed the jailer, and Hema Malini portrayed Basanti. "We have lost one more gem of an actor. Asrani ji who has regaled audiences with his superb comedy, is no more. He has done many memorable roles in movies with me but but his role as jailor in Sholay was simply mind blowing!"

Hema Malini added, "The film industry, already in shock with the passing of Pankaj Dheer, now has to contend with one more severe loss. Heartfelt condolences to his family who have to bear this heavy loss (folded hands emoticon)."

Aamir Khan, Kajol, Manoj Bajpayee, and Akshay Kumar were among the celebrities that expressed condolences regarding Asrani's passing.

Govardhan Asrani's Illustrious Bollywood Career

In terms of his career, he most recently appeared with Kajol in the JioHostar series The Trial Season 2. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the seasoned actor played leading parts in Gujarati films and made appearances in over 350 films.

Asrani became one of the most adored characters in Hindi film during the course of a career that lasted more than 50 years.  He is well-known for his expressive acting and perfect comedic timing. His role as the jail warden in the 1975 film Sholay is still a staple of Indian popular culture.  He has recently appeared in films like Bunty Aur Babli 2, Dhamaal, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa.  R...
