Several Bollywood actors have reached out to the High Court for protection of personality rights and the new addition is Shilpa Shetty. The actress recently filed a case in the Bombay High Court seeking personality rights protection. The suit includes several websites which used the actress’s pictures illegally. Not only that, several morphed pictures and videos have also surfaced, which prompted Shlipa to take legal action. According to Hindustan Times, the case has been filed by advocate Sana Raees Khan.

The advocate told the news outlet, “Ms. Shilpa Shetty has built her reputation over decades of work, and no entity can appropriate her name or likeness without consent. The unauthorised commercial exploitation of her identity is an outright assault on her dignity and hard-earned reputation. No individual or platform has the right to exploit her reputation for unlawful commercial gain, and we will ensure strict enforcement of her personality rights. We have moved the Bombay High Court to put a stop to such misuse and to safeguard her identity from being treated as a commodity.”

In a year, several celebrities including Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Karan Johar, Rishab Shetty, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and Akkineni Nagarjuna moved to court to seek protection of their personality rights. The Bombay High Court passed comparable orders for Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and others, reinforcing stronger protection against the unauthorised commercial use of their names, pictures and voice.

Personality rights refer to an individual’s legal entitlement to control the commercial and public use of their identity. They safeguard attributes that are unlikely linked to a person, such as their name, image, likeness, voice, signature, or even trademark catchphrases, from being exploited without consent. The rights have been broken into two parts-the Right of Publicity and the Right to Privacy.
