Sholay – The Final Cut: The long-awaited restored 4K version of one of Bollywood's iconic films is finally set to return to cinemas across the country soon. Sholay – The Final Cut is scheduled to release in December, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Dharmendra, Hema Malini, and Amitabh Bachchan starrer and will be screened in over 1,500 theatres. Ramesh Sippy's directorial masterpiece created a historic and lasting impact on Indian cinema with its compelling storyline, powerful performances and box office success. The re-release of the 4K version of Sholay has sparked excitement and nostalgia among fans.

Sholay – The Final Cut Release Date

The producers of the 4K restored version, Sholay – The Final Cut, Film Heritage Foundation and Sippy Films, announced the re-release of the film with its original ending. The post on X read, "The wait is finally over!! “Sholay - The Final Cut” restored by Film Heritage Foundation in 4K with the original ending being seen for the first time is slated to be released by Sippy Films in 1500 screens across India on December 12, 2025!!!"

The re-release is significant as it allows moviegoers to experience the film’s uncut version. The original ending had been altered before the film’s debut in 1975 due to censorship imposed during India’s Emergency period.

What Was Sholay's Original Ending?

The original ending of the 1975 blockbuster film depicted former police officer Thakur Baldev Singh (late Sanjeev Kumar) taking his long-awaited revenge from dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) by killing him with his spiked shoes. However, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), was unhappy with the ending and wanted the makers to change it before the release. In accordance, director Ramesh Sippy reshot the ending in which Gabbar, after being beaten up by Thakur, is arrested by the police.

More About Sholay: The 1975 hit starred Dharmendra as Veeru, Amitabh Bachchan as Jai, Sanjeev Kumar as Thakur, Amjad Khan as iconic Gabbar, Hema Malini as Basanti and Jaya Bachchan in the lead roles. Directed by Ramesh Sippy and written by the renowned duo of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar (Salim-Javed), the movie was a huge success at the time of its release, becoming the highest-grossing film of that year. Earlier this year, the film was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), garnering international acclaim.
