Over the years, the Tamil film industry has given massive box office hits like 2.0, Jailer, Leo, and Vikram, to name a few. Despite breaking several milestones, these films could not reach Rs 1000 crore mark, unlike other South Indian film industries like Telugu and Kannada. Speaking upon this, Sivakarthikeyan listed a couple of factors which justified why not a single Tamil movie crossed Rs 1000 crore club. The Amaran actor believes that apart from the quality of the film, ticket pricing is also very important to gain numbers at the ticket windows, which he is strictly against.
Sharing his views, Sivakarthikeyan told Cinema Express, “Like I said before, we did not think about the number Amaran would make while working on it. You cannot make a film like that.”
The actor then stated why Kollywood hasn’t produced a Rs 1000 crore film yet. He added, “Apart from the quality of a film, there are other factors to consider, such as ticket pricing. I am not in favour of increasing the ticket prices, but if we charged as much as in Bengaluru or Mumbai, then Jailer would have easily crossed ₹800 crores, if not Rs 1000 crores.” Talking about Rajnikanth’s film, which collected Rs 604 crore.
Earlier, Sivakarthikeyan starrer Madharaasi’s release, director AR Murugadoss spoke to Sudhir Srinivasan and said, “You cannot write thinking this film must make ₹1000 crore, that is not the way to do it. Holding the audience’s interest is the only thing you must focus on. Those ₹1000 crore will be an achievement if that works. But is it correct to have numbers as your target? It must be all about the presentation and storytelling. When I made Ghajini, I just knew I wanted it to reach audiences in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, and nothing more. My main goal was to generate that interest.”
Sivakarthikeyan’s Madharaasi released in theatres on September 5. The film had a box office collection of Rs 44.45 crore in just 5 days of release. It also features Rukmini Vasanth, Biju Menon, Shabeer Kallarakkal and Vikranth in key roles.
