The Kapil Sharma Show: Before becoming a household name with The Kapil Sharma Show, actor and comedian Sunil Grover went through one of the toughest phases of his life. In a recent interview, his former co-star Upasana Singh, who played ‘Bua’ on the show, revealed that Sunil was battling depression and was even hospitalised shortly before joining the comedy series in 2013. According to her, Sunil was struggling to find work and had been feeling low when the show was first launched.

Upasana Singh, in a conversation with Lallantop Cinema, said, “When Kapil’s show started, he was not well. He told me he was hospitalised because of depression. He didn’t have much work either. When he came to my house with Kapil, I didn’t even recognise him because he wasn’t doing much then.” Upasana also revealed that during the early days of Comedy Nights With Kapil, the creative team considered firing Sunil because they felt he wasn’t keeping up with the pace of the show. “When he initially came in, he spoke slowly. The creative team thought he couldn’t do it and wanted to fire him. But I told them that he is a very good actor and they should keep him on,” she recalled. Her faith in him soon proved right, as Sunil’s characters like Gutthi, Dr Mashoor Gulati, and Rinku Bhabhi became iconic and won over millions of viewers.

Kapil Sharma And Sunil Grover’s Rift

Despite their on-screen chemistry, things took a turn in 2017 when Sunil reportedly left the show after an alleged mid-air altercation with Kapil Sharma. Kapil later admitted that there had been an issue but denied exaggerated rumours about violence. He apologised publicly on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Paji Sunil Grover, sorry if I hurt you unintentionally. You know how much I love you.” Sunil responded with a heartfelt message urging Kapil to show “respect and gratitude” towards his colleagues. Their fallout made headlines for months, though the two later reunited for The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix in 2024.
