Thalaivar 173: South cinema legends Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are reuniting on screen after several decades and the official announcement has set the internet buzzing. On Wednesday evening, Kamal Haasan took to social media to confirm the collaboration and shared pictures with Rajinikanth along with a handwritten note revealing key details about the much-anticipated project. The announcement also surprised many, as the film will not be directed by fan favourites Lokesh Kanagaraj or Nelson Dilipkumar. Instead, the directorial reins have gone to popular filmmaker Sundar C, known for his commercial entertainers.

Sharing the news on X (formerly Twitter), Kamal Haasan wrote, “Like wind, like rain, like river. Let’s shower, let’s enjoy, let’s live! Superstar Rajinikanth will star in the movie directed by Sundar C and produced by Raaj Kamal Films International #Thalaivar173 #Pongal2027.” This project marks Rajinikanth’s 173rd film, which will hit cinemas during Pongal 2027 and will be distributed by Red Giant Movies. Kamal also included a heartfelt message celebrating his long-standing friendship with Rajinikanth. The note described the collaboration as a celebration of “five decades of friendship and brotherhood between Superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, a bond that continues to inspire generations of artists and audiences alike.”

Meanwhile, the internet reacted instantly to the announcement, with fans and industry members expressing both excitement and surprise over Sundar C’s inclusion as director. Sundar’s wife, actor-politician Khushbu Sundar, was thrilled, posting, “My heroes in one frame! Excitement beyond words!” Many fans shared similar enthusiasm, calling it a “dream collaboration” and praising the duo for coming together again after so many years. One fan commented, “Rajinikanth-Kamal combo going strong since the 1970s. Is there any duo like them in any industry?” However, not everyone was pleased with the choice of director as one user wrote, “The unity I wished for. Not the director I asked for,” expressing mixed feelings about Sundar C’s appointment.
