A fictional political drama based on historical events is called The Bengal Files. Taking place in the 1940s, the novel depicts the sectarian violence that was prevalent in Bengal at that time. In addition to depicting the suffering of Partition, the movie revisits the terrible events of Direct Action Day and the horrific Noakhali riots.
The Bengal Files Controversy
The Bengal Files' release was fraught with controversy. Several multiplexes in West Bengal reportedly declined to show the movie because of claimed threats. The crew had strong reactions to this. According to a press statement, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), which represents 36 affiliated associations and numerous members in the film and television industries, is concerned about the 'undeclared ban' even as the film struggles to find theaters in West Bengal.
The portrayal of Gopal Patha, who was instrumental in defending Hindus during the 1946 riots, is another factor contributing to the controversy surrounding The Bengal Files, which many have labeled a propaganda film. His grandson has also voiced dissatisfaction. In a recent complaint against Agnihotri, he said that Patha is disrespected by The Bengal Files.
