Pankaj Tripathi recently addressed the issue of low footfall in movie theatres and revealed what, according to him, is the main reason behind it. Lately, cinema halls have seen fewer audience filling the seats with their presence, which is affecting the movie makers as well as the exhibitors. Some people believe that the changing taste in terms of cinema and art has made them shift to OTT platforms with a diverse range of content available online. Whereas others feel that watching something of your choice according to your preferred time, in the comfort of your home, is another reason for people not going to the PVRs.
Pankaj Tripathi opened up on this issue during an interview with Hindustan Times and expressed his thoughts on the same. He believes that the high ticket price is the main reason for people’s dislike towards going to the cinema. He said, “Ticket pricing ek mudda hai aur uski bhi ek bhumika hai (in poor collections). If a family has to go to the theatre today, it’s a very costly affair. Ticket prices and the food served there are so expensive.”

Metro In Dino actor further stated, “I don’t know much about the commercial aspect of cinema, so the business game is beyond my understanding. And as an actor, my focus is just on the film. But I do feel that movie tickets are too costly and that’s surely a deterrent.”
Pankaj Tripathi continued to shed light on the topic and shared a common man’s point of view. “On Tuesdays or on National Cinema Day, when the prices are lowered, the occupancy in cinema halls goes up. So, if we have fairly priced tickets, the footfall will surely increase. For a family to spend ₹2,000 and spare five hours (including travel time) is not an easy thing,” he added.
However, he also feels that a good movie and a better word-of-mouth can also help attract the audience to the theatres. He explained, “Whenever there is a good film then the audience comes. They came in large numbers in Stree2 (2024). So, I believe, to motivate people to come to the theatre, it's either the trailer should be intriguing or it gets a good word-of-mouth.”
The talented actor continued to explain that people find it difficult to manage the commuting time and expense, parking charges and snacking rates altogether, and thus, prefer staying at home and watching content on their digital screens.
