Dharmendra Deol and Hema Malini's love story is known to everyone. The duo fell in love with each other during the shoot of Sholay. Though Dharmendra was already married, his love for Hema Malini never ended which led him to take a step that nobody could have ever thought at the time. The He-Man of Bollywood famously crashed Hema Malini and Jeetendra's secret wedding ceremony in Chennai which was arranged by the actress' mother. Hema's mother was not in support of their relationship as Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur and he didn't want to divorce her.

Hema Malini's mother arranged her to marry Jeetendra as she hoped to end her controversial affair with the married Dharmendra. The wedding was planned to be a private affair in Chennai, but a tabloid newspaper got wind of the secret wedding plans and published the news. Soon after learning about Hema Malini's wedding, Dharmendra, reportedly slightly drunk, immediately flew to Chennai. He was accompanied by Jeetendra's then-girlfriend, Shobha Sippy (later his wife).

Dharmendra showed into the wedding venue and confronted Hema Malini's family. "Why don't you get out of my daughter's life? You are a married man; you can't marry my daughter," said her father. Later, the actor was allowed to speak to Hema Malini in private and then she requested time to make a decision.

Jeetendra's family were frustrated and they left the venue and the wedding was called off. Later, in October 1974, Jeetendra married his then girlfriend Shobha Sippy.

Dharmendra and Hema Malini finally got married on May 2, 1980, after converting to Islam—Dharmendra became Dilawar Khan and Hema became Aisha Bi—to facilitate the marriage without him divorcing his first wife.
