Bengali actress Sumi Har Chowdhury, known for her roles in movies like Dwitiya Purush and Khashi Katha: A Goat Saga, was recently found in a confused and disoriented state near Amila Bazar in the East Burdwan district of West Bengal. Wearing shorts and a black full-sleeved shirt, she was seen sitting by the roadside with a pen and paper, speaking incoherently in a mix of Bengali and English.

Locals initially assumed she was just a random passerby. However, when she repeatedly said, “I am an actress,” some people searched her name on the internet. Her photos and movie appearances confirmed that she was indeed Sumi Har Chowdhury, who had previously worked in popular Bengali films and television serials.

Once her identity was confirmed, local residents informed the police. According to the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Bardhaman Sadar South, Abhishek Mandal, Sumi was found near the Bardhaman-Arambagh state highway. “She has been sent to a shelter home, and we are trying to contact her family. We have already informed the Behala police station in Kolkata,” said Mandal. When questioned by the authorities, Sumi gave conflicting answers about her background. At one point, she claimed to be from Kolkata; later, she said she was from Bolpur. Police suspect she was originally a resident of Behala in Kolkata and may have lived in Bolpur for some time.

Who Is Bengali Actress Sumi Har Chowdhury?

Sumi Har Chowdhury had played supporting roles in well-known Bengali films, including Srijit Mukherji’s Dwitiya Purush, which received good critical response, and Khashi Katha, a bilingual movie featuring veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. She also appeared in television serials like Roopsagare Moner Manush and Tumi Ashe Pase Thakle.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Sumi was first noticed when she took shelter from the rain at a rest area in Khandaghosh. She introduced herself to locals, who were initially sceptical, but later recognised her through online searches. “She seemed mentally disturbed, but kept repeating that she had acted in serials,” a resident told. As of now, the reason behind her sudden appearance in such a vulnerable condition remains unclear. The police are reportedly continuing their investigation and efforts are on to trace her family.
