Oscars 2024: Following weeks of anticipation, the Oscars announcement arrived on Monday (March 11), revealing that the India-set Canadian documentary 'To Kill a Tiger' fell short against '20 Days in Mariupol'. Directed by Nisha Pahuja, originally from Delhi and currently residing in Toronto, 'To Kill a Tiger' received support from Priyanka Chopra, who served as an executive producer. The documentary released on Netflix, had Dev Patel and Mindy Kaling as executive producers.

'To Kill a Tiger' was nominated alongside films such as 'Bobi Wine: The People’s President', 'The Eternal Memory', 'Four Daughters', and the eventual winner, '20 Days in Mariupol', which offered a chilling first-person narrative of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In an emotional statement, Chernov expressed his gratitude, stating, "This is the first Oscar in Ukrainian history, and I’m honoured. Probably I will be the first director on this stage to say I wish I’d never made this film, I wish to be able to exchange this to Russia never attacking Ukraine."

About To Kill A Tiger

Produced by Cornelia Principe and David Oppenheim, the film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature Film. It has garnered twenty-four awards globally, including the Best Documentary accolade at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the Best Feature Documentary honour at the Canadian Screen Awards.

The documentary depicts the journey of a family from Jharkhand advocating for justice following the brutal rape of their teenage daughter. Described in the film's official synopsis as a 'cinematic documentary,' it follows the father's efforts to have the accused men arrested. However, his relief is fleeting as the villagers and their leaders initiate a relentless campaign to pressure the family into withdrawing the charges.
