Oscars 2024 Shortlists: The highly anticipated shortlists for the 96th Academy Awards have been revealed, sparking a whirlwind of excitement, surprises, and a few unexpected snubs. Greta Gerwig's dazzling film, 'Barbie', emerges as a frontrunner with an impressive five nominations, but not without its share of unexpected twists. The much-talked-about Malayalam film '2018' centred around the devastating floods in Kerala, failed to secure a spot in the International Feature Film category. However, other noteworthy titles like 'The Zone of Interest' (United Kingdom), Tran Anh Hung’s 'The Taste of Things' (France), Lila Aviles' 'Totem' (Mexico), and Aki Kaurismaki’s 'Fallen Leaves' (Finland) seized their spots, adding an international flair to the Oscar lineup. Regrettably, there are no entries from India this year.

Greta Gerwig's cinematic masterpiece, 'Barbie', takes the lead with an impressive five nominations. The film's prowess is evident in its domination of the sound category and securing three entries in the original song section, featuring Billie Eilish's 'What I Was Made For?', Dua Lipa’s 'Dance the Night', and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s 'I’m Just Ken'. Additionally, the film earns its place in the original score category, showcasing its multifaceted brilliance.

Apart from 'Barbie', musical compositions by Daniel Pemberton in 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse', Ludwig Goransson in 'Oppenheimer', and the late Robbie Robertson for 'Killers of the Flower Moon' also stand out in the music categories. Notably, two songs from 'The Colour Purple' make their mark, with 'Keep It Movin' and 'Superpower' performed by Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino, respectively. However, a major miss for 'Barbie' comes in the makeup and hairstyling category, where it faces unexpected competition.

In a surprising turn, expected contenders like 'The Colour Purple' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' missed the cut in the makeup and hairstyling category. Instead, 'Beau is Afraid' and the horror thriller 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' take the spotlight. Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' also throws a curveball by missing out on the visual effects category but compensates with mentions in makeup, sound, and score.

As the shortlists provide an early glimpse into potential Oscar contenders, speculation is rife about which films will receive significant support from different segments of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' and Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' are both generating buzz, setting the stage for a captivating showdown at the 96th Academy Awards.

With the category lists open for voting from January 11 to January 16, film enthusiasts and industry insiders eagerly await the release of the official nominations on January 23. The 96th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 10, with final voting taking place from February 22 to 27. As the cinematic world holds its breath, the stage is set for a night of glamour, surprises, and the celebration of outstanding achievements in the world of film.
