Oscars 2025 Likely To Be Cancelled Due To Los Angeles Wildfires? Here Is What We Know

This is the first in history Oscars is likely to be cancelled. As per a report by The Sun, the 97th Academy Awards is likely to be called off due to the Los Angeles fire. The ceremony, led by stars like Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep and Steven Spielberg, is currently monitoring the situation in LA to make their final decisions. A source told the portal, “The board’s main concern at this time is to not appear as if they are celebrating while many Angelenos are dealing with heartbreak and unimaginable loss. Even if the fires were to subside in the next week, the reality is that the city is still hurting and will continue to deal with that pain for months. Therefore, the hierarchy has decided that the focus will shift toward support and fundraising when the right opportunities present themselves.” 

This month, the Oscar nomination announcement has been delayed. Initially, it was slated for January 17 but now it is scheduled for January 19, 2025. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang earlier shared a joint statement on January 13 about Oscar nominations. The ceremony was initially scheduled to be held on March 2, 2025. They wrote, “We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community. The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship. Due to the still-active fires in the Los Angeles area, we feel it is necessary to extend our voting period and move the date of our nominations announcement to allow additional time for our members.”
