Bollywood has produced some haunting stories on OTT platforms; these movies go beyond cliches, using compelling performances and subtext to create fear that makes viewers feel intimate and unsettling. From gothic folk horror tales like Bulbbul to horror mystery thrillers like Bhoot: Part One - The Haunted Ship, these films blend suspense, psychological depth and chilling storytelling. Based on my experience, horror thrillers should be on the binge-watch list for a good and spine-chilling experience. Here are five must-watch Hindi horror thrillers on OTT that I personally recommend.

5 Horror Thrillers On OTT

1. Tumbbad (Prime Video)

Tumbbad is a 2018 dark mythological folk-horror film that explores greed, inheritance and obsession. The story revolves around Hastar, a demon-god who passed on the greed to generations of a family in a cursed village. The film’s haunting and rain-drenched visuals, combined with a folkloric storyline, make it a cautionary film with a myth about obsession and inheritance. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, the film stars Sohum Shah, Jyoti Malshe, Anita Date, and Ronjini Chakraborty.

2. Kaun? (Netflix)

Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, a psychological thriller set inside one house. A young woman alone in her house on a stormy night, terrified by news of a serial killer and two mysterious men enter her house, but the ending is mind-blowing. Manoj Bajpayee's unpredictable presence keeps us guessing whether he is the serial killer or not, while Urmila Matondkar's performance as an innocent woman and her vulnerability make the movie deeply unsettling. She suffers from mental illness, as she talks to her mother on a disconnected phone, in a chilling final scene, smiling unsettlingly at the audience.

3. Bulbbul (Netflix)

Triptii Dimri has left audiences spellbound with her performance as Bulbbul. This is not like a conventional horror drama; instead, it brings a feminist twist. Triptii's transformation from innocent girl to being a menace is haunting. Bulbbul (2020) doesn't give an instant fear but creates an emotional depth by exploring patriarchy and women's life experiences.

4. Ek Thi Daayan (Prime Video)

Emraan Hashmi as magician Bobo with childhood trauma, fighting his past involving a witch, sets the tone for the movie. The film keeps audiences hooked by blurring the lines between reality and hallucination, by bringing potential witches, until the suspense unfolds. Konkona Sen Sharma takes possession of her character and takes the spotlight with her gripping performance, giving the film its chilling edge. The film resonates more because of the familiar fear that someone you trust turns sinister.

5. Bhoot: Part One - The Haunted Ship ( Prime Video)

The film revolves around a mysterious and haunted ship stranded on Mumbai’s shores and a naval investigating officer, Prithvi. As he uncovers the case, his grief turns into hallucinations, even as paranormal activities are actually taking place around him and on the ship. Vicky Kaushal's compelling performance as a grieving man on duty adds a raw emotional depth to the narrative.
