The music legend and Padmashri awardee, Pankaj Udhas is no more! The esteemed ghazal singer, renowned for classics such as 'Chitti Ayi Hai' and 'Chandi Jaisa Rang,' succumbed to a long-standing illness. His daughter Nayaab Udhas announced the news on Instagram. She wrote, "With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform of sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to prolonged illness."
Pankaj Udhas, hailed as a master of the ghazal genre, carved an illustrious career marked by a plethora of timeless melodies. His rise to fame began with the release of his ghazal album 'Aahat' in 1980, engaging audiences with subsequent hits like 'Mukarar,' 'Ek Taraf Uska Ghar', 'Aaj Jinke Kareeb Hote Hai', 'Tarrannum,' and 'Mehfil.' One of his most iconic renditions was-- Mahesh Bhatt's 1986 crime thriller Naam's 'Chitthi Aayee Hai.'
Throughout his musical journey, Udhas's velvety vocals and emotive delivery garnered widespread acclaim, establishing him as a stalwart in Indian music. In 1994 when he lent his vocals alongside Sadhana Sargam for the song 'Na Kajre Ki Dhar' in the film Mohra, which became a chartbuster. Additionally, Pankaj Udhas made significant contributions as a playback singer in movies such as Saajan, Yeh Dillagi and Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee among others.
Udhas's contributions to music extended beyond borders, earning him international recognition and cementing his legacy as a legendary artist. His timeless songs continue to enchant audiences with their enduring beauty and emotional depth, ensuring that his musical legacy lives on.
