Mani Ratnam's magnum opus 'Ponniyin Selvan 2' is all set to hit the theatres on April 28. After the success of the first instalment, the movie has created a lot of hype amongst the audience and fans have a lot of expectations from 'Ponniyin Selvan 2' as well.
Ponniyin Selvan 2 Box Office Preview:
The first instalment of 'Ponniyin Selvan' collected around Rs 500 crore at the box office and was a big success. The second instalment is expected to earn even more considering the hype around it.
According to ETimes, 'Ponniyin Selvan 2' has crossed Rs 11 crores worldwide with advance bookings only. Meanwhile, the movie has crossed Rs 6 crore in Tamil Nandu only with its advance bookings.
According to Pinkvilla, 'Ponniyin Selvan 2' is expected to register the 3rd biggest opening in the USA among Tamil films and is behind Kabali and Ponniyin Selvan 1. The US premiere gross of 'Ponniyin Selvan 2' is likely to be around 700 - 800 thousand dollars, whereas, its first instalment had a million-dollar premiere.

Recently, at an event, Karthi talked about why 'Ponniyin Selvan 1' did not do well in North India as compared to KGF, Kantara and RRR.
"I think they (the audience in the North) found it a bit difficult to understand. That’s what I felt initially. When you are reading a novel, you will forget the names by the time you get to the tenth page. Similarly, here too they had that problem. However, when the film was released on OTT, they were able to get it. So, they will be able to better understand the film when the second part comes. However, the film was praised for its aesthetics," he said as quoted by Pinkvilla.

'Ponniyin Selvan' is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name. The franchise stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman and R. Parthiban.

At an event, Mani Ratnam revealed that 'Ponniyin Selvan' was his dream project and thanked the cast and crew for their hard work.
“PS (Ponniyin Selvan) has been a dream for a very long time, since the time I first read the book during my school days. I neither thought I’d ever get into films nor did I think I'd make it. But it’s always been my calling to be made. It’s so spectacular as a story and as an adventure. Several people had tried to do this before. They couldn’t for various reasons. Maybe they wanted to leave it for me! I am so happy and so glad that I got a chance to make it, and that too at this point in time when the technology has improved tremendously," he said.
Apart from directing, Mani Ratnam has also produced and written the film, along with Lyca Productions. It is co-written by Elango Kumaravel and B Jeyamohan. Meanwhile, Siva Ananth is the film’s Executive Producer.
