Matthew Macfadyen recently shared his thoughts on playing Mr Darcy in Joe Wright’s 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Despite the film’s success and enduring popularity, Macfadyen admitted he didn’t fully enjoy the role at the time. He expressed regret over not relishing the experience more, revealing that he was concerned about not being "dishy enough" for one of literature’s most beloved romantic heroes.

Macfadyen told CBS Mornings, “I didn’t really enjoy it. There were moments I had a good time, but I wish I had been less worried about it.” Despite his reservations, he acknowledges that the role worked out well in the end. Reflecting on the ongoing recognition he receives for his portrayal, he commented, “The most flattering thing that happens to me now is people saying, ‘Were you Mr. Darcy?’ It’s a good 20 years later, so I think, ‘I can’t be ageing that badly.’”

The 2005 film, featuring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet, also starred an impressive cast including Donald Sutherland, Rosamund Pike, Jena Malone, Tom Hollander, Judi Dench, Carey Mulligan, Talulah Riley and Rupert Friend. Despite Macfadyen’s initial doubts, his performance has been widely admired, particularly in the scene where Mr. Darcy helps Elizabeth into a carriage.

Comparisons to Colin Firth’s portrayal of Mr Darcy in the 1995 TV series remain prevalent, with Firth’s iconic wet shirt scene being frequently referenced and parodied, including a nod in the recent season of Bridgerton.

Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813, tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet and her interactions with the wealthy Mr. Darcy. The narrative, set in early 19th-century England, explores themes of class, love and misunderstanding, making it a timeless classic.
