Prithviraj Sukumaran, who is both directing and starring in the upcoming Malayalam film L2 Empuraan, recently opened up about an interesting casting decision. During the film’s promotion in Mumbai, he revealed that he cast actress Nikhat Khan Hegde — who plays Subhadra Ben — without knowing that she is Aamir Khan’s sister.

The actor-director shared that he was deeply impressed with Nikhat’s audition tape and immediately knew he wanted her for the role. It was only later that his casting director informed him about her family connection. Recalling the moment, Prithviraj said, “I liked her performance the moment I saw her audition. I told my team that I wanted her in the film. That’s when my casting director mentioned, ‘By the way, she’s Aamir sir’s sister.’ I was surprised and even called Aamir sir. He recently messaged me asking, ‘Is my sister good in the film?’ and I told him, ‘Sir, she’s a lot better than good.’”

Nikhat Khan Hegde, known for her roles in Pathaan and Mission Mangal, brings depth to her character, Subhadra Ben. Describing the role, Nikhat said, “Subhadra Ben is a regal woman who owns a large haveli. She’s dignified but compassionate, helping people in need. She carries love and resilience but also faces betrayal. Playing her allowed me to explore many emotional layers, and I feel honoured to convey an important message through this character.”

Prithviraj also expressed his hopes for L2 Empuraan, the sequel to his 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, to resonate across the country. The film, starring Mohanlal as Stephen Nedumpally — aka Khureshi Ab’raam — will release on March 27, 2025, in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi.

“We dream big down south,” Prithviraj said. “This time, I believe we’ve matched that ambition with quality. I’m nowhere near the most polished filmmaker from Kerala, but I hope this film has a finesse that appeals to audiences nationwide.” The film’s ensemble cast includes Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Abhimanyu Singh, Eriq Ebouaney, Jerome Flynn and Suraj Venjaramoodu, promising a thrilling cinematic experience.
