Priyanka Chopra Joins SAG-AFTRA in Hollywood Actors' Strike: In a historic move, SAG-AFTRA, one of the major unions for actors in Hollywood, made a significant announcement on July 14 at midnight. For the first time in 63 years, they declared their participation in the writers' strike. The Screen Actors Guild took this action after unsuccessful negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for a new labour agreement. Notably, actress Priyanka Chopra has also joined the movement in support.

Priyanka took to Instagram to express her backing for the movement, sharing a photo that symbolised her support. In her caption, she affirmed her solidarity with her fellow colleagues, and wrote, "I stand with my union and colleagues. In solidarity, we build a better tomorrow." The strike has had repercussions on the production of numerous upcoming shows and films.

The ongoing strike in Hollywood has had an impact on various projects, including the filming of 'Heads of State,' Priyanka Chopra's upcoming project with John Cena. An Instagram fan page provided an update, mentioning that the Screen Actors' Guild initiated the strike, leading to a complete halt in Hollywood's operations.

As a member of SAG-AFTRA, Priyanka is unable to shoot for any movie or TV project worldwide until a new agreement is reached between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP, ultimately resolving the actors' strike. Insider sources predict that the strike may extend until early fall, possibly until September.

The ongoing strike has had consequences for the promotional campaigns of both 'Oppenheimer' and 'Barbie.' Notably, the cast of 'Oppenheimer' took a decisive step by leaving the London premiere abruptly once the strike commenced, highlighting the immediate impact it had on the film's promotional events.

What Is The Hollywood Strike?

On Thursday morning, the US actors' union Sag-Aftra, which was established in 2012 through the merger of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, initiated the strike. This action followed the failure of negotiations with the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers), the organisation representing studio executives and bosses.

With approximately 1,60,000 members, Sag-Aftra represents a diverse range of professionals, including actors in film and television, video game performers, radio hosts, models, and YouTube influencers. Although the union's jurisdiction is technically limited to the US, its Global Rule One dictates that members must withdraw from any production, regardless of its location worldwide.

What Does Sag-Aftra Want?

One of the primary responsibilities of the union is to engage in negotiations with the studios, and the most recent significant agreement was signed in July 2020. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic swiftly undermined its implementation. As the agreement was set to expire on June 30, negotiations for a new agreement began. Residuals, which refer to payments received by actors for subsequent showings of films or TV shows, have emerged as a major point of contention. Additionally, the question of ownership of an actor's likeness, replicated by artificial intelligence (AI), has become another significant area of disagreement.
