Renowned Indian playback singer P. Jayachandran, beloved for his soulful and emotive voice, passed away on January 9, 2025, at the age of 80 in Thrissur, Kerala. Known as ‘Bhava Gayakan’ (The Singer of Emotions), Jayachandran’s voice captivated listeners across generations.
Born on March 3, 1944, in Ernakulam, Kerala, Jayachandran began his illustrious career in 1966 with the song Manjalayil Mungithorthi from the Malayalam film Kalithozhan. Over the course of nearly six decades, he recorded more than 16,000 songs in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi.
Some of his most iconic songs include Rathiriyil Poothirukkum from Thanga Magan, Ayalathe Sundari from Thacholi Marumakan Chandu, and Naale Naale Ente Naale from Aadya Kiranangal. His songs Nadha Nee Varum from the Tamil film Thalapathi and Sangeethame from Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal remain etched in the hearts of fans for their melody and depth.

Jayachandran’s exceptional talent earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. In 1986, he won the prestigious National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his song Sivasankara Sarva Saranya Vibho. He also received multiple Kerala State Film Awards and Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. In 2020, Jayachandran was honoured with the J. C. Daniel Award, recognizing his immense contribution to Malayalam cinema and music.
P. Jayachandran’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian playback singing, but his timeless songs will continue to resonate with music lovers around the world.
