Squid Game 2: After years away from the spotlight, BIGBANG’s T.O.P has made a remarkable comeback to acting with his role as Rapper Thanos in Squid Game 2, which premiered on December 26, 2024. The much-anticipated second season of Netflix’s global phenomenon introduced T.O.P in a complex and intriguing role that has already left fans buzzing.

T.O.P, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun, portrays Rapper Thanos, a character whose enigmatic presence and unpredictable actions add depth to the intense storyline of Squid Game 2. The series, known for its gripping narrative and high-stakes survival games, elevated the stakes this season with T.O.P’s character bringing a unique blend of charisma and menace.

This role marks T.O.P’s first acting project since his 2016 film Out of Control. Fans and critics alike have praised his portrayal, noting how seamlessly he stepped back into the acting world after an extended hiatus. Rapper Thanos, with his layered personality and pivotal role in the series, showcases T.O.P’s versatility and talent, reminding audiences why he was once celebrated as one of the most promising actors in South Korea.

Despite his impactful performance, T.O.P was notably absent from the promotional activities for Squid Game 2. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk addressed this during a press conference, stating, “Despite the long hiatus, I have to say, as a director, he performed very impressively and I’m very satisfied with what he did with the character.”

For those unfamiliar, Choi Seung-hyun, who rose to fame as T.O.P. of BIGBANG, faced a significant setback in 2017 when he was arrested for marijuana use, which is illegal in South Korea. He was convicted and sentenced to ten months in prison, with a two-year suspension from mandatory military service. This scandal led to his absence from the entertainment industry for several years. However, T.O.P. made a major return in Squid Game Season 2.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke about the decision to cast him, acknowledging the actor’s past, saying, “As you may know, Seung-hyun was involved in a marijuana scandal nine years ago and was unable to take on projects in Korea during that time. This is his comeback after a long hiatus, especially as he plays a rapper and someone involved with drugs.”

Ahead of the series’ release, T.O.P shared his thoughts on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to return to acting. He wrote, “It’s been a long journey back, but I’m grateful to be part of a project as meaningful as Squid Game 2. Rapper Thanos is a character close to my heart and I hope viewers feel the same connection.”

While T.O.P’s comeback has been celebrated globally, it hasn’t been without controversy. In a recent broadcast, MBC blurred his face during a news segment about Squid Game 2. This sparked backlash from fans, who accused the network of disrespecting the actor’s efforts and contribution to the series. The incident reignited discussions about T.O.P’s past controversies and their lingering impact on his career.

T.O.P’s return has also reignited discussions about his illustrious career. As a member of BIGBANG, he gained global fame for his deep voice and dynamic performances. Transitioning to acting, he proved his mettle in acclaimed projects like 71: Into the Fire and Commitment. With Squid Game 2, T.O.P bridges his music and acting careers, creating a character whose rap-infused persona resonates with his roots as an artist.

Social media has been abuzz since the release of Squid Game 2. Fans have praised T.O.P’s nuanced performance, with many calling it a highlight of the season. Comments like “T.O.P IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER” and “Rapper Thanos stole the show!” have been trending, showcasing the excitement surrounding his return.

While T.O.P has not yet revealed his future plans, his performance in Squid Game 2 has left fans eager to see more of him on screen.
