Veteran Nepali actor Sunil Thapa, best known for his impactful villainous roles in films and for portraying Priyanka Chopra’s coach in the biopic drama Mary Kom, has passed away at the age of 68. His demise marks the end of an era, leaving the film industry and his admirers in deep mourning. Hours after his demise, his Mary Kom co-star Priyanka Chopra took to her Instagram handle and mourned the loss.
Priyanka shared a snip from Mary Kom where Thapa is seen training her for her role. She penned an emotional note, reading, "You will always be my Coach Sir. You kept me together when I had just lost my dad. You loved me and helped me through many tough days without even realizing. Your warm hugs and your laugh will always be part of my memories. Gone too young but never forgotten. Thank you for your kindness at a time that I was broken. Rest in peace Sunil Thapa. My condolences and prayers are with the family and loved ones."
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang also expressed his condolences, taking to his Facebook account to pen a heartfelt note in remembrance of the late actor and to offer support to his family during this difficult time.
He wrote, "Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Shri Sunil Thapa, whose powerful performances especially as Rate Kaila left an indelible mark on Nepali cinema. His talent and legacy will continue to inspire generations of artists. Heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and admirers. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace."

Born in Dang, Nepal, Sunil Thapa featured in more than 300 Nepali films over a prolific career. He earned widespread recognition for his iconic portrayal of Rate Kaila in the film Chino, a role that cemented his status as one of Nepali cinema’s most memorable actors.
