Playback singer Uma Ramanan, known for her contributions to Tamil cinema, passed away in Chennai. She is survived by her husband, singer AV Ramanan, and her son, Vignesh Ramanan. The cause of her death remains undisclosed, and further details about her funeral arrangements are awaited.

Trained in classical music, Uma Ramanan performed in over 6,000 concerts over a span of 35 years. Her musical journey began with the song 'Mohanan Kannan Murali' composed by SV Venkatraman for the movie 'Sri Krishna Leela' in 1977. She trained in classical music under Pazhani Vijaylaksmi, she later crossed paths with AV Ramanan, who was seeking talented singers for his stage shows and concerts. Soon, they began with their joint concerts. However, it was her rendition of the song 'Poongathave Chocha Thakavai' from the film 'Nizhalgal,' composed by Ilaiyaraaja, that propelled her to widespread fame in the Tamil film industry.

Some of her notable songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja include 'Bhoopalam Isaikkum' from 'Thooral Ninnu Pochchu', 'Aanandha Raagam' from 'Panner Pushpangal', 'Kanmani Nee Vara' from 'Thendrale Ennai Thodu', 'Ponn Maanae' from 'Oru Kaidhiyin Dairy', 'Aagaya Vennilave' from 'Arangetra Velai', and 'Sri Ranga Ranganathanin' from 'Mahanadi', among others.

During her career, Uma collaborated with a multitude of composers, such as MSV, Shankar-Ganesh, T Rajender, Deva, SA Rajkumar, Chili, Mani Sharma, Srikanth Deva, and Vidyasagar. Additionally, she and AV Ramanan contributed their vocals to a song in the Hindi film 'Playboy.' Uma Ramanan's final song was 'Kannum Kannumthan Kalandaachu' for Vijay's 'Thirupaachi'. Composed by Mani Sharma, she performed the song alongside Harish Raghavendra and Premji Amaren.
