The movie revolves around Mahito Maki, who moves to the countryside after his mother's death and finds an abandoned tower near his new home. His life takes a different turn when the young boy enters a fantastical world with a talking grey heron.

The Japanese cast of the movie is Soma Santoki, Masaki Suda, Ko Shibasaki, Aimyon, Yoshino Kimura, Takuya Kimura, Kaoru Kobayashi, and Shinobu Otake. The English cast includes Luca Padovan, Robert Pattinson, Karen Fukuhara, Gemma Chan, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, Florence Pugh, William Dafoe, Dave Bautista and Denise Pickering.

'The Boy And The Heron' won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film and the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
