The White Lotus Season 4 Update: Three-time Emmy-winning composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, renowned for creating the iconic theme song for HBO’s The White Lotus, has made a lasting impact with his unique style throughout the past few seasons. However, he will not return for Season 4. Yes, you read it right. The composer made this decision after a fallout with show creator Mike White over the musical score across the show’s acclaimed three seasons.
The White Lotus composer Tapia de Veer shared his departure in an interview with The New York Times, revealing that he and Mike White had conflicting visions for the show’s theme song. This divergence in direction began in Season 1 and continued into the production of the currently airing third season. In the first two seasons, Tapia de Veer’s eerie theme song played a significant role in creating the unsettling atmosphere of the show, with odd sounds like the recurring "ooh-loo-loo-loo" chorus. However, the removal of the "ooh-loo-loo-loos" in Season 3 sparked confusion among viewers.
Regarding the current season, Tapia de Veer explained that Mike White wanted a song with a vibe more suited to Ibiza or a chill, sexy club atmosphere. Ultimately, the theme song ended up as a traditional lounge tune instead.
On the changes to the Season 3 theme, Tapia de Veer shared: “I texted the producer and suggested that it would be great to give them the longer version with the 'ooh-loo-loo-loos,' because people would explode once they realized it was going that way. He thought it was a good idea, but Mike cut it. He wasn’t happy about that.”
The composer added, "I informed the team a few months ago that I wasn’t returning, that I was leaving. I didn’t tell Mike for various reasons; I wanted it to be a shock when I did. I told the whole editorial team, the music editor, and the producer, but I didn’t think they’d tell him. Eventually, he heard about it."
