Sohum Shah, known for his acclaimed role in Tumbbad, shared his insights on the challenges faced by actors from smaller towns trying to make it in Bollywood in a recent interview with Pinkvilla. As Tumbbad continues to break records following its re-release, Shah has opened up about the ongoing insider vs outsider debate in the film industry.
Sohum highlighted that aspiring actors from cities like Mumbai often have an advantage over those from smaller towns. He remarked, “Jo Bombay se hoga wo 3rd lap se shuru karega kyunki usko angrezi bhaasha aati hai uske dost hain, use kabhi bhi emotionally homesickness ya alone feel nahin hoga. Uske dost yahan hai uske maa-baap yahan hai.” (Translation: "The one who is from Bombay will start from the third lap because he speaks English, has friends, and will never feel emotionally homesick or alone. His friends and parents are here.")
He emphasized that newcomers from Mumbai have better access to industry connections and understand the workings of public relations and media, giving them a leg up in navigating the complexities of Bollywood. Despite his success, Shah admitted that he still struggles with networking in the industry. He confessed that he is not comfortable attending Bollywood parties, which can often be crucial for establishing connections. He noted, “I haven’t learned how to network in Bollywood yet,” revealing the unique challenges he faces as an outsider.

Reflecting on his journey with Tumbbad, Sohum shared that he dedicated seven years to the project, inspired by advice from Aamir Khan. He recalled, “I could give seven years to Tumbbad because of that rule Aamir taught me: to stick to it and believe it will take you somewhere. Even when I faced insecurities about my age and the urge to pursue other films, that rule helped me stay focused.”
Since its re-release in August, Tumbbad has garnered impressive box office success, earning Rs 28.5 crore. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, the film tells the gripping tale of a hidden treasure in Tumbbad, Maharashtra, showcasing both a unique story and stunning visuals.
