New Delhi | Jagran Entertainment Desk: The newly released ‘Ujda Chaman’ on the topic of baldness has been in the headlines for its clash with another film on the same topic. Today the film is released on the big screens but failed to fantasise the audience.

The character of Ujda Chaman -- 30-year-old Chaman Kohli -- in this film is played by Sunny Singh. He is from Delhi’s Rajouri Garden, and is a subject of laughter and sneering due to his baldness. Adding to his misery he has been rejected by a number of prospective brides because of his balding plate.

Moving further in the film, even the family astrologer (Saurabh Shukla) of Kohli family, can’t help in solving his problem but increases the problem by predicting that if Chaman does not get married by the age of 31, he will remain a bachelor for the rest of his life.

The first half of the film entirely revolves around depicting the problems of a bald person, and the most significant of them is the one that of not finding a life partner. However, the problems shown in the film are contrary to the current trends where bald or shaved scalps are now considered to be a fashionable and acceptable look, as the millennial now follows the rule of ‘No Judgements’.

Chaman is a Hindi teacher in a government college, and almost started dating his student who understands his misery but she also leaves him for some obvious reasons. In the second half of the film, Chaman finds a Tinder match, Apsara (played by Maanvi Gagroo), but to the irony of Chaman, she is a plumpy woman. The two are suffering from rejections and started to empathise each other and finally fall victim to the cupid’s arrow.

Talking about the acting, Sunny Singh has to improve his comic timing as he can’t do justice to the role riding solo this time. Manvi Gagroo as Apsara shows promise but gets very little to work on. Saurabh Shukla gets the maximum applause and laughs with only two scenes, with his pitch-perfect performance.

There are too many missed opportunities here. An oddball romance between two unlikely partners would have proved a far better bet for Ujda Chaman than focussing on the list of socially embarrassing situations premature baldness can cause. Overall, the film is below average and we will give it 1.5 stars out of 5.
