Upcoming South Releases: This month is set to be an exciting one for cinema enthusiasts, especially those looking forward to South Indian films. As the monsoon season arrives, it's the perfect time to settle in for some captivating movies on the big screen. The release calendar for August is packed with highly anticipated films, offering a variety of genres and stories. Notable releases include Boat, Thangalaan, Mr. Bachchan, and Raghuthatha, among others. With so many promising titles lined up, moviegoers should prepare for a month of exceptional entertainment and cinematic experiences.

Boat (August 2)

Tamil comedian Yogi Babu's latest film, Boat, will make its debut on the big screen, promising to deliver a captivating period survival drama. Directed by Chimbu Deven, the film is set against the backdrop of World War II, specifically in 1943, and follows ten passengers on a boat stranded in the Bay of Bengal amidst the chaos of a war-torn Madras Presidency. As the boat begins to sink, the passengers face life-threatening challenges, adding to the intense drama of the narrative.

Yogi Babu plays the role of the boatman, who must make crucial decisions during the crisis. The film also stars Gouri G Kishan, Madumkesh Prem, MS Bhaskar, and others, all contributing to a thrilling storyline.

Mazhai Pidikatha Manithan (August 2)

Directed by Vijay Milton and starring Vijay Antony and Megha Akash, the Tamil film delves into an unexpected love story, centering on a secret agent who lives under the radar. His solitary existence takes a turn when he meets a woman struggling with debt. Despite his usual detachment, he forms a bond with her while rescuing a puppy, leading him to assist her with her financial troubles.

Jama (August 2)

Marking his directorial debut, Pari Elavazhagan’s film Jama features Pari Elavazhagan himself alongside Ammu Abhirami, Chetan, and Sri Krishna Dayal, with a compelling musical score by the renowned composer Ilaiyaraja.

Andhagan (August 9)

The Tamil remake of the Hindi hit Andhadhun. Directed by Thiagarajan, this crime thriller stars Prashanth as Krish, a blind pianist who accidentally witnesses a murder. The film also features a strong supporting cast including Simran, Priya Anand, Karthik, Yogi Babu, Samuthirakani, Urvashi, K. S. Ravikumar, Vanitha Vijayakumar, and Manobala.

Thiagarajan acquired the rights to remake Andhadhun in 2019, and initially, Mohan Raja was set to direct. However, Raja was soon replaced by JJ Fredrick, who also stepped down, leading to Thiagarajan taking over the directorial role.

Thangalaan (August 15)

The film has captured significant attention with its initial reveal, showcasing Vikram in a groundbreaking role. Directed by Pa. Ranjith, this historical fantasy film is set during the British Raj and follows the story of a powerful tribal leader. Vikram stars as Thangalaan, a formidable tribal leader who embarks on a mission to challenge Aarathi, a sorceress, after assisting British general Lord Clement in locating gold in their village. The film also features a strong ensemble cast including Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Daniel Caltagirone, Hari Krishnan Anbudurai, Vettai Muthukumar, Krish Hassan, Arjun Anbudan, and Sampath Ram.

Mr. Bachchan (August 15)

The film stars Ravi Teja, is based on a real-life income tax raid and promises to be a major spectacle. Directed by Harish Shankar, it features Bhagyashri Borshe as the female lead alongside Ravi Teja. The film is an official Telugu remake of the Hindi film Raid, with Ravi Teja taking on the central role.

Double iSmart (August 15)

Directed by Puri Jagannadh, this highly anticipated film, starring Ram Pothineni, is set to compete with several other major releases on the same date. It serves as a spiritual sequel to the 2019 hit iSmart Shankar. Produced under the Puri Connects banner, the film also features performances by Sanjay Dutt, Kavya Thapar, Bani J, and Sayaji Shinde.

Raghuthatha (August 15)

Featuring Keerthy Suresh, the Tamil comedy-drama, showcases her as a strong, independent police cadet who defies societal norms and challenges questions about her personal choices, especially regarding marriage. Raghuthatha marks Suman Kumar’s directorial debut. Produced by Hombale Films, the powerhouse behind the successful Kannada franchises KGF and Salaar, this project represents their foray into Tamil cinema.
