Renowned singer Usha Uthup’s second husband Jani Chacko Uthup passed away on 8th June. He suffered a cardiac arrest at his residence in Kolkata. Her meeting with Jani was no less than a movie itself. They met at 1969 a night club in the City of Joy where the singer was performing at that time Usha was already married to Ramu. 

According to Vikas Kumar Jha's 2022 book The Queen of Indian Pop: The Authorised Biography of Usha Uthup, Ramu accompanied her to Kolkata for her performance in the nightclub. There she saw Jani for the first time at a nearby table. Usha saw that Ramu and Jani were talking to each other and felt relief that he husband got company. The very next day Jani invited Ramu for a meal. On that same evening, while performing at the night club Usha saw that her husband was absent and Jani was present there. After the show was over, Jani approached the singer for a drive which later she accepted. The duo didn’t talk during the ride. 

As per the book, when she reached home “Usha knocked on the door and Ramu opened it. His face turned pale looking at Jani standing behind Usha. Even as Usha stepped inside, Ramu said to Jani Uthup who was standing at the door, ‘That’s enough Mr Uthup! You can go.’ Usha couldn’t figure Ramu’s uneasiness. What had happened to her husband who was normally very calm? Ramu slammed the door shut.”

After the singer responded to her husband’s behaviour. The book read, “He screamed and broke down. ‘Do you know what Jani Uthup told me this afternoon at the Chinese restaurant? He said, ‘I don’t know about Usha and her feelings, but I am in love with your wife.’’ As he said this Ramu was shaking with anger. ‘Okay, he said that to you. So, what happened?’ Usha said in a soft voice. ‘He didn’t say anything to me.’ ‘But what Jani said...is it true? Do you have the same feelings for him?’ Ramu’s voice was distraught. 'Yes! Usha replied, pushing aside all fear.” 

Her husband Ramu didn’t take the statement well. Ramu threw a plate violently. Usha cried a lot that night. Slowly, their marriage fell apart and later she decided to move on with Jani.
