The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday directed the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) to submit a compliance report in connection with the Bandhwari landfill case. The directive came during a hearing after a team from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) inspected the landfill on August 27 and flagged serious lapses.

According to the CPCB report, issues such as leachate leakage and waste spilling beyond the landfill boundaries up to Faridabad Road were observed. Taking a stern view, the tribunal sought an immediate response from MCG.

Earlier, during a hearing on August 14, the NGT had noted that negligence in leachate management had led to contamination of water in nearby villages and forest areas, posing a grave risk to public health and the environment. The tribunal had then asked officials of the Central and State Pollution Control Boards to file reports within three weeks.

The case, based on petitions filed by environmental activists Poonam Yadav and Vivek Kamboj, concerns the massive waste dump at Bandhwari and its impact on the surrounding ecosystem. The next hearing is scheduled for October 27.

At present, around 200 kilolitres (KLD) of leachate is generated daily at the site, with the volume increasing during the monsoon. For the past year, the absence of a protective garland drain has allowed leachate to spread onto village roads and forest areas.

MCG officials said measures such as installing view-cutters and developing a green belt around the landfill have been taken. They added that leachate is being transported by tankers to the Bahrampur Sewage Treatment Plant. “The NGT’s directions will be fully complied with,” said Sandeep Sihag, Executive Engineer, MCG.

The landfill receives 1,200 tonnes of waste daily from Gurugram and 900–1,000 tonnes from Faridabad. However, no agency is currently processing it. MCG has recently prepared a plan to send 600 tonnes of waste per day to a waste-to-energy plant in Sonipat.
