After a decade-long hiatus, cancer treatment is set to resume at the District Civil Hospital in Sector-10, offering major relief to patients who previously had to travel long distances for care. The construction of a new Cancer Day Care Centre is in its final stages, with the administration aiming to make it operational by the end of January.

End Of Decade-Long Wait

The hospital's previous cancer ward was closed in 2016 following the resignation of specialist Dr SP Bhanot. Since then, no specialist had been appointed. The revival of these services aligns with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s budget announcement regarding the establishment of cancer day care centres at the district level.

Infrastructure: The new six-bed centre is nearly complete. Machinery and equipment have arrived, and doctors and nursing staff have been trained.

Services: The centre will provide chemotherapy infusion facilities, counseling for coping with the disease, and medical support for managing side effects.

Affordability: Cancer medicines and drugs for other serious illnesses will be available at reduced prices to prevent financial hardship for families.

Collaboration With AIIMS Jhajjar

Dr Lokveer, CMO In-charge, explained the operational workflow, stating that the centre will function in coordination with AIIMS Jhajjar.

Referral System: It will be mandatory for patients to undergo their first chemotherapy session at AIIMS Jhajjar. Subsequently, referred patients can receive follow-up treatments at the Civil Hospital.

Inspection: A team from AIIMS Jhajjar is scheduled to visit soon for a final inspection before operations commence.

Impact: This arrangement is designed to save seriously ill patients from the physical and financial burden of repeatedly traveling to Jhajjar.

Existing Diagnostic Capabilities

While treatment is restarting now, diagnostic services have been active since February 2024 through the hospital's histopathology lab.

Detection Rate: The lab conducts biopsies and testing, confirming cancer in approximately 10 to 15 patients every month.

Common Cases: The majority of detected cases are breast and oral cancers. Until now, these patients were referred to Delhi or Jhajjar immediately after diagnosis.

Administrative Changes: Dr Lokveer Takes Charge In a significant administrative development, District Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Alka Singh has retired. Following her retirement, the administration has assigned the additional charge of CMO to Dr Lokveer, who is currently the Principal Medical Officer (PMO) of the District Civil Hospital.

New Leadership: Dr Lokveer stated that his priority will be to provide better and more accessible medical facilities to the public and to strengthen health services in accordance with government policies.
