In a tragic incident reported from the Sadar police station area, a 21-year-old delivery executive died late Monday night after allegedly falling onto a burning coal brazier (angeethi) while asleep. While the police have prima facie termed the incident an accident, the victim's family has alleged foul play.
The Incident
The deceased, identified as 21-year-old Manjur Alam, originally from Udi Pukhru village in South Dinajpur, West Bengal, lived in a rented EWS room behind Malibu Town.
Discovery: The incident occurred late Monday night. Manjur was found with half his body on the bed and part of his head burnt on the brazier.
Circumstances: According to the police inquiry, Manjur and his friends had been consuming alcohol in the room. He allegedly fell from the bed onto the burning brazier while sleeping, leading to his death.
Timeline Of Events
Manjur's maternal uncle, Rizaul Karim, who lives in a nearby room, provided the following timeline:
11:00 PM (Monday): Rizaul had dinner with Manjur and left for his own room. Two of Manjur's friends, including one named Aman, were present.
Post-Dinner: After Rizaul left, Manjur, Aman, and a third individual reportedly consumed alcohol. The third friend left later, while Aman stayed back to sleep in Manjur's room.
5:00 AM (Tuesday): Aman called Rizaul to inform him that Manjur had fallen onto the brazier and was burnt.
Family Alleges Foul Play
Rizaul Karim has expressed strong suspicions regarding his nephew's death and alleged that the police were initially reluctant to record his complaint.
Motive Suspected: Rizaul revealed that Manjur was reportedly in a relationship with a young woman. He claimed that the couple had an argument just three days prior to the incident and suspects this may be linked to the death.
Sole Earner: The uncle highlighted that Manjur had been working as a delivery boy in Gurugram for four years and was the sole financial support for his parents back in the village.
Police Investigation
The Sadar police station has initiated proceedings and sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
Official Statement: ASI Manjit Kumar, the investigating officer, stated that preliminary inquiries suggest Manjur was intoxicated and accidentally fell from his bed.
Current Status: The police have questioned the uncle and the friend (Aman) who was present in the room. Officials stated that further action will be determined based on the post-mortem report and a thorough investigation into all aspects of the case.
