Taking cognisance of the dilapidated state of public sanitation facilities, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has decided to overhaul the city’s community and public toilets by adopting successful models from Kolkata, Puducherry, Surat and Indore.

The Plan: Studying Best Practices

Corporation officials are preparing to construct new toilets based on modern standards found in the four identified cities.

RFP Analysis: The MCG has sought Request for Proposals (RFPs) from these cities to study their structural designs, operational models, and maintenance systems.

Key Focus Areas: The evaluation will focus on implementing smart toilets, door-to-door management, digital monitoring systems and sustainable revenue models.

Current State Of Facilities

The initiative comes in the wake of a recent special report by Dainik Jagran highlighting the poor condition of the city's approximately 110 community and public toilets.

Issues: Most facilities suffer from a lack of water supply, inadequate sanitation, and foul odors, making them unusable for the public.

Expansion: Officials acknowledge that given Gurugram’s growing population, it is essential to not only rebuild old facilities but also increase the total number of toilets.

Technology Integration (The Indore Model)

The MCG is looking to replicate the technological integration seen in Indore and other cities.

IoT Sensors: The Indore Municipal Corporation is installing Internet of Things (IoT) based sensor systems in 350 smart public toilets. This allows for real-time monitoring of water levels, odor, and cleanliness.

Automated Alerts: If a toilet becomes dirty, the corporation is instantly notified. Similar GPS and sensor-based technologies are being utilized in Kolkata, Puducherry and Surat.

Future Implementation

Sundar Sheoran, Executive Engineer, Municipal Corporation, Gurugram, stated that after studying the RFPs, toilets with modern facilities will be constructed in high-footfall areas, including:

  • Crowded markets
  • Metro stations
  • Bus stands
  • Parks
  • Industrial areas
