To enhance connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram, the central government has initiated plans for a new expressway connecting AIIMS to Gurugram via Mahipalpur. Work on the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already commenced.

The DPR will provide a feasibility report and clarify which sections of the route will be underground and which will be elevated. There is speculation that the section from AIIMS to Mahipalpur may be underground, with the remainder of the route being elevated, but this will be confirmed upon completion of the DPR.

Currently, the journey from AIIMS to Gurugram's Sirhaul Border takes at least 1.5 hours during peak traffic. Reaching the Gurugram-Faridabad road can take a minimum of two hours. Once the new expressway is complete, this travel time is expected to be reduced to just 20 to 25 minutes. This will significantly reduce traffic congestion on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, especially between the Sirhaul Border and Mahipalpur, saving time and reducing pollution.

Project At A Glance

Length: Approximately 35 kilometers, signal-free.

Estimated Cost: Around Rs 5,000 crore.

End Point: It will connect to the Gurugram-Faridabad road opposite Ghata village.

Lanes: The underground and elevated sections will both be six lanes wide.

Connectivity: It will be linked to major roads leading towards the airport in the Delhi region.

A Web Of Connectivity

The new expressway will integrate with a network of major highways:

It will connect to the Gurugram-Faridabad Road. Near Ghata village, this road links with the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), which in turn connects to the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and the Dwarka Expressway.

The Gurugram-Sohna Highway, which passes through Vatika Chowk, connects to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway near Alipur village, just before Sohna. The SPR also links with the service lane of the Gurugram-Sohna Highway at Vatika Chowk.

Thus, the AIIMS-Gurugram expressway will not only benefit residents of Cyber City and South Delhi but will also directly serve residents of various areas in Delhi and Haryana, as well as travelers to and from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

In Delhi, the expressway will start from AIIMS INA and pass through Brigadier Hoshiar Singh Marg, Africa Avenue, Vasant Vihar, Nelson Mandela Marg, and Vasant Kunj.

The Biggest Advantage: Bypassing NCR's Choke Point

The most severe traffic congestion in the Delhi-NCR is on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway between Mahipalpur and the Sirhaul Border. Even after the construction of the Dwarka Expressway, an average of 300,000 vehicles cross the Sirhaul Border daily, with the majority of this traffic occurring during peak hours (8 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 9 pm).

Upon completion of the new expressway, vehicles traveling from Delhi Airport or AIIMS towards Faridabad, Palwal, Nuh, Alwar, Jaipur, Dausa, and Mumbai via Vadodara will be routed through Mahipalpur, completely bypassing the congested Sirhaul Border, IFFCO Chowk, and Rajiv Chowk.

Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra said, "The central government is committed to improving connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram. Better connectivity will reduce traffic congestion on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. A reduction in traffic congestion will also lower pollution levels. In this direction, work is underway on the plan to build the Gurugram-Faridabad road via the AIIMS-Mahipalpur expressway. Additionally, many other projects will be implemented in the future to reduce traffic congestion throughout the NCR, including Delhi. Gurugram has made its mark on the world map. Significant work is being done in this direction".
