New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: With a surge of 34,884 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 tally on Saturday reached 10,38,716, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare while adding that 671 fatalities were reported during the same period.
According to the Union Health Ministry, the novel coronavirus, caused by SARS‑CoV‑2, has claimed 26,273 lives in India while the active number of cases in the country stands at 3,58,692. Meanwhile, the recovery rate in India stands at 62.93 per cent as 6,53,751 people have been cured from coronavirus and discharged from hospitals.
In India, Maharashtra, which is the worst-hit state, has reported 2.92 lakh coronavirus cases and over 11,000 deaths while Tamil Nadu is second worst affected with 1.60 lakh cases and more than 2,300 fatalities. Delhi has reported 1.20 lakh coronavirus cases and over 3,000 deaths while Karnataka has reported more than 55,000 cases and over 1,100 fatalities.
The novel coronavirus, which originated in China's Wuhan, has been rising at an alarming rate in India. The country had on Friday crossed the grim milestones of 10 lakh cases. The government, however, has asserted the situation is under control. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India's response to the deadly infection is a "people's movement", adding that India's grass-roots health system has helped the country ensure "one of the best recovery rates in the world".
Meanwhile, the Centre has also said that as per the test, trace, treat strategy, it is driving enhanced testing initiatives in states and union territories as a result, of which there has been a steady rise in the number of testing labs across the country. As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 1,34,33,742 samples were tested for COVID-19 till 17th July, of these 3,61,024 samples were tested on Friday.
