A 90-year-old woman in Delhi has died after testing positive for Covid-19, marking the city's eighth coronavirus-related fatality this year. According to the Union Health Ministry, the woman had multiple underlying health conditions including respiratory acidosis, congestive heart failure (CCF), and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Officials have clarified that while she tested positive for Covid-19, the virus was an incidental finding and not the primary cause of death.
Delhi currently has 691 active cases, with the national tally standing at 6,815.Kerala remains the worst-affected state with 2,053 active cases, having added 96 fresh infections in the past day. It is followed by Gujarat, West Bengal, and Delhi, all seeing moderate but consistent case numbers.
Experts attribute the current uptick in cases to the emergence of newer Omicron sub-variants like JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC. These variants are more transmissible but are currently associated with milder symptoms. The World Health Organization has listed them as “Variants Under Monitoring,” indicating that they are not a cause for immediate concern but require close observation.
Health authorities stress that while Covid-19 has not disappeared, it has transitioned into a more seasonal and manageable illness resembling influenza in its behaviour. Regular fluctuations in case numbers are expected, but the virus no longer poses the unpredictable threat it once did.
