The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Tuesday emphasised the importance of completing the mandatory biometric update (MBU) for children above seven years of age. In a special drive, UIDAI has sent SMS to the mobile numbers registered in Aadhaar of such children to complete the MBU process. The authority stated that the parents can update their child's details at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra or designated Aadhaar centre. It further stated that completing the MBU is compulsory, adding that the parents can consult the Aadhar center for more information.

A child below the age of five can register for Aadhaar by providing basic details, including a photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address, and documents as proof. The UIDAI does not demand fingerprints and iris biometrics, as these are not developed at this age. The authority stated that the Aadhar number might get deactivated if the MBU is not completed even after seven years of age.

"As per existing rules, therefore, fingerprints, iris and photo are mandatorily required to be updated in his/her Aadhaar when the child reaches the age of five years. This is called the first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU)," the statement said, reported PTI.

"Timely completion of MBU is an essential requirement for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of biometric data of children. If the MBU is not completed even after seven years of age, the Aadhaar number may be deactivated, as per the existing rules," the statement added.
