A Facebook Live stream from Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district has gone viral after political activist Fatima Farooq publicly challenged her husband while protesting the arrest of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik. As Fatima voiced her outrage over Malik’s detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA), her visibly angry husband burst into the frame, hurling abuses and attempting to physically stop her from speaking.

Despite the chaos unfolding around her, Fatima held her ground. She continued to speak out against what she called “blatant injustice,” even as her husband tried to shut her down mid-broadcast.

'Who Is Mehraj Malik To You? Fatima's Husband Questions

In the now-viral video, Fatima is seen addressing her viewers directly. “A representative of one lakh people has been booked under the Public Safety Act on the grounds that he’s a threat to public safety. How can this happen?" she asks, staring into the camera.

Before she can finish, her husband storms into view, yelling, “Tu kya live kar rahi hai? Why are you doing this?"

A heated back-and-forth happens.“Are you out of your mind?" he demands. “What wrong have I done?" Fatima fires back.

“Does your brain work?" he presses further.

“Yes, my brain works. Did I say anything against you?" she responds without flinching.

Pushing further, he challenges her: “Who is Mehraj Malik to you?"

Her response is calm but firm: “Mehraj Malik is no one to me, but I am standing with justice."

When he tries to grab the phone, Fatima turns the camera toward him, telling her viewers, “You all can see… standing with the truth." Fatima's husband then tries to snatch her phone and verbally abuses her.

As tensions peak, her husband issues a chilling threat, “Stop it or I will choke your throat." Seconds later, the livestream abruptly ends as he shouts, “Kar bandh isko!"

Legal Action: Couple Taken Into Custody

Following the disturbing incident, local police detained both Fatima Farooq and her husband. Fatima faces charges of violating prohibitory orders and unlawful assembly. Her husband could be booked under domestic violence laws for his aggressive behavior during the livestream.

Fatima has not filed a formal complaint against him. Just days earlier, Fatima had been seen clashing with police during a protest over Malik’s arrest, later appearing in a wheelchair ironically being pushed by the same man who berated her in front of a live audience, as per a report by News18.

Why Was AAP MLA Mehraj Malik Arrested?

Mehraj Malik, the only Aam Aadmi Party MLA in Jammu and Kashmir and a Muslim leader from Doda, was taken into custody under the stringent Public Safety Act. District Magistrate Harvinder Singh claimed Malik posed a “grave threat to public order,” citing his criticism of local authorities and his vocal stance on unpaid dues and poor healthcare facilities in the region.

Recently, Mehraj Malik had used harsh language against the district administration over unpaid dues and the state of health services. Jammu and Kashmir Aam Aadmi Party MLA Mehraj Malik was arrested on Monday under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) for allegedly disturbing public order in Doda district, officials told NDTV.

The PSA allows detention without formal charges or trial for extended periods up to two years in some cases making this the first time a sitting MLA in the region has been detained under such provisions.

Reacting to the arrest, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah posted on X (formerly Twitter), “There is no justification for detaining Mehraj Malik under PSA. If the unelected government can use its powers against an elected representative like this, how does anyone expect the people of J&K to continue to have faith in democracy?”
