A sarpanch of Aam Aadmi Party was shot dead during a wedding function at a resort in Punjab's Amritsar, the police said on Sunday.

The deceased, Jarnail Singh of Valtoha, was shot dead by two unidentified men while he was attending a wedding ceremony.

Amritsar's Commissioner of Police said that the attackers were outsiders. The police said that the attackers opened fire, and a gunshot hit the deceased politician's forehead.

As he fell on the ground, he was immediately rushed to a hospital. He succumbed to his injuries, the police added. 

"We have been examining the spot and have started an investigation from all angles," said Amritsar CP.

Sukhbir Badal shares incident video

Reacting to the incident, Akal Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal shared a video of the incident and highlighted a rise in targeted killings, calling it a "worrisome pattern".

"In an X post, he said, "Strongly condemn the cold-blooded murder of Sarpanch Jarnail Singh of Valtoha village (Tarn Taran), who was shot dead at a wedding function in Amritsar today. This follows an extremely worrisome pattern: yesterday, a young man was gunned down in Bhinder Kalan (Moga) and on Friday a woman was shot dead in Kapurthala."

"Targeted killings in public places have become routine, exposing the complete policing failure under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the Home portfolio. The CM must be held accountable for this lawlessness," he added.

DCP Jagjit Walia also reached the spot. News agency IANS quoted him, saying, "This is Marigold Palace. We have just learned that a person named Jarnail Singh, a resident of Valtoha, was shot dead. The police are investigating the incident. We are at the location and working on the case..."

Jarnail had previously survived three attacks, according to IANS. The police started an investigation into the matter and were trying to get footage from the CCTV camera installed on the site to identify the shooters.

The firing incident triggered chaos with guests running to safety. The murder has sent shockwaves through the political circles in Punjab. An eyewitness said, "The program was going well when two boys came, fired shots, and ran away..."
