Abhishek Banerjee Attack Case: A day after TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee was attacked with stones and eggs in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, the investigation has taken a fresh turn after several of those arrested were found to have alleged links with former Sonarpur TMC MLA Lovely Maitra.
The latest development has raised questions over whether the incident was an isolated act of violence or a sign of deeper tensions within the party.
Police have so far arrested at least five people in connection with the attack on Abhishek Banerjee.
Among those arrested are Tapan Maity and Akash, who were allegedly seen in videos linked to the incident. The accused have been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to News18, citing sources, Tapan Maity and Nirmalya Sengupta, also known as Joy, were close to former TMC MLA Lovely Maitra.
Kajal Das and Debasish Dutta were also reportedly associated with the former legislator. All four are now among those arrested in the case.

What Happened?
The TMC national general secretary was attacked on Saturday when he visited the house of an alleged victim of post-poll violence in Sonarpur town. Following the incident, Banerjee claimed that BJP activists were trying to kill him.
On Sunday, the TMC claimed that the police action was merely a formality and alleged that the actual perpetrators were linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has further alleged that BJP's Mondal president Abhijit Biswas was present at the incident and was "actively directing and instigating" the crowd. The party questioned the BJP's claim that the incident was a spontaneous expression of public anger, asking who had mobilised the crowd and who was behind the attack.
The party also raised concerns over the security arrangements provided to Banerjee, questioning whether the central security cover allotted to a sitting Member of Parliament would continue to accompany him in such situations.
"Today, I stand as a victim of political violence and state-sponsored terrorism unleashed by those who claim to be the guardians of nationalism," Banerjee wrote in a social media post.
