Tamil actor Vijay Thalapathy on Friday announced the launch of his new political party, "Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam" and said that his party will not be supporting anyone in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections but will contest the 2026 Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu. Vijay, a popular name in south cinema said that his party will not be contesting in the general elections as decided in its recently held General Council and Executive Council meetings. Thalapathy's "Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam" loosely translates to "Tamil Nadu Victory Party."
Talapathy's fans celebrated the spontaneous announcement of the party even as speculations were rife for some time about the actor the political plunge in a state known for stars graduating from cinema to politics, including the late veterans M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.
"I have decided to complete the film I have already committed to, without affecting the party work and completely involve myself in the politics of public service. I consider this as my gratitude towards the people of Tamil Nadu," Vijay said.
The 49-year-old with a huge fanbase has been taking part in welfare activities through his fan club 'Vijay Makkal Iyakkam'. "I humbly wish to state that the party’s general council and executive committee have decided neither to contest nor to extend support to any party in the general elections 2024," Vijay said in an official statement.
He said that his party's focus is to win in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly and insinuate a political shift in for the people of the state.
The Actor who is currently shooting for GOAT under the direction of Venkat Prabhu confirmed that he will acting in only one more film, tentatively titled, "Thalapathy 69".
