The Tata Group has expressed anguish over the crash of Flight AI-171, which had taken off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport for London. Calling it a tragic incident, the group Chairman, N Chandrasekaran, said emergency response teams were activated and efforts were in full swing to provide immediate relief to the affected passengers.
He said an emergency centre was set up for families seeking information about their kin.
“With profound sorrow I confirm that Air India Flight 171 operating Ahmedabad London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event. At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted. Further updates will be shared as we receive more verified information. An emergency centre has been activated and support team have been set up for families seeking information,” the statement shared by Tata Group, parent company of Air India, read.
As many as 242 passengers, including 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew, were onboard the Air India B787 Aircraft that crashed in a civilian area shortly after takeoff. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also reportedly on board the flight. However, no official statement has been made in this regard.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the Aviation Minister, Rammohan Naidu, to seek more information about the incident. Naidu told the PM he was heading towards Ahmedabad to oversee the relief and rescue operation.
Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the police commissioner over the incident. He assured full support from the centre in relief and rescue operation.
