The aircraft was carrying 242 people, 230 passengers, two pilots, and 10 crew members, when it crashed just seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad for London Gatwick Airport on Thursday. Only one person, a British national of Indian origin, survived the crash.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the causes of the fatal crash of Air India Flight AI-171.

According to the ministry, the panel will examine the circumstances leading to the crash and review the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines currently in place.

In a post on X, the ministry stated that the committee’s primary objective is to recommend a robust framework for preventing and effectively managing similar aviation incidents in the future.

The ministry also clarified that this committee will not replace other investigations being conducted by relevant organizations but will focus specifically on formulating SOPs to prevent and handle such incidents going forward.

Ministry of Civil Aviation tweets, "A High Level Multi-disciplinary Committee is constituted for examining the causes leading to the crash of the Air India Flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick Airport (London) on June 12, 2025. The Committee will examine the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines issued to prevent and handle such occurrences and suggest comprehensive guidelines for dealing with such instances in the future. The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, with First Officer Clive Kundar as co-pilot.

Members of the Indian community in the UK paid homage to those who died in the London-bound Air India plane crash, outside the High Commission in London.

Rushabh Rupani, son of BJP leader Vijay Rupani, arrived at his father's residence in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

BJP leader and former CM of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani died in the Air India AI-171 plane crash. Yesterday, Rupani's wife returned to India following the tragic incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Vijay Rupani's family during his visit to Ahmedabad in the wake of the tragedy. He also visited the plane crash site and the civil hospital to meet the injured and the lone survivor, Ramesh Vishwash Kumar.

The flight was heavily fueled for the long-haul journey, which intensified the explosion and fire that followed the crash. Multiple fire engines and ambulances were dispatched to the crash site to conduct rescue operations. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to launch a formal investigation, potentially with the involvement of a technical team from Boeing. Officials have yet to release a statement regarding the suspected cause of the crash.

A senior police officer said, “As per preliminary investigation, a London-bound Air India flight has crashed at the doctors' hostel. Within 2–3 minutes, police and other agencies reached the spot. Almost 70–80% of the area has been cleared. All agencies are working here.”
