Delhi News: Two new MRI machines have been purchased in AIIMS Delhi and will be installed in separate blocks soon. As per the AIIMS administration, the operation of these two new MRI machines will start soon. The hospital which records a daily patient load of over 30,000 people on average already has seven MRI machines. Out of which three machines are in the NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) department. One MRI machine is in the Radiology department and one machine in the Trauma Center and another MRI machine is installed with Gamma Knife. Apart from this, there is one MRI machine each in the Trauma Center and National Cancer Institute (NCI). About 14 thousand patients visit the OPD of AIIMS every day. Despite the availability of seven MRI and 10 CT scan machines, waiting for tests in AIIMS has been an ongoing problem.
What Is MRI Technique?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique that uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues in the body. MRI scans are used to diagnose conditions almost anywhere in the body, including the brain, the spinal cord, breasts, liver and prostate.
Each MRI Machine Examines Around 30 Patients Per Day
To overcome the problem of waiting in the investigation, AIIMS Director Dr M Srinivas, a few days after taking charge of the institute, made a provision to continue CT scan and MRI investigation 24 hours a day in AIIMS in October 2022. Along with this, instructions were also given to increase the number of machines. With the investigation facility being available 24 hours, CT scan and MRI tests also increased. AIIMS claims that about 30 patients are examined daily with each MRI machine. Still, there is a waiting period of up to three years for an MRI examination.
MRI Examination Of Needy Patients Within 48 Hours
According to the AIIMS administration, priority of tests is decided on the basis of severity of the disease. Giving priority to emergency patients, MRI tests are done within a few hours. On the other hand, MRI tests of needy patients admitted in the hospital are done within 48 hours. OPD patients who are more serious are given time within two to four weeks for MRI tests.
A New MRI Machine Being Installed In Each National Old Age Centre
AIIMS Media Division in-charge Dr Reema Dada said that a new MRI machine is being installed in the NMR department and the National Old Age Centre. This will enable MRI tests of more patients. The elderly patients visiting the National Old Age Centre will not be required to go to any other block of AIIMS for MRI tests. MRI tests will also be conducted in the National Old Age Centre itself.
