Air India has decided to decrease its dependency on the Turkish company, Turkish Technic, for repairing its aircraft. The move came after a diplomatic fallout between the two nations, with Ankara backing and reinforcing Pakistan during the Operation Sindoor.
The airline CEO, Campbell Wilson, said that Air India will henceforth send its Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft to other countries for repairs.
On being asked about Air India aircraft being repaired by the Turkish company, Wilson, in an exclusive interview with PTI, said the company was aware of the situation and would take cognisance of the national sentiment while making decisions.
“It does take a while to adjust when the circumstances change around us, but we are obviously sensitive to the national sentiment and perhaps the national wishes. So, regardless of which country we are talking about, we would clearly take cognisance of what people like us to do and expect us to do," he said.
The CEO said the airline was mulling alternatives to send aircraft for repairs and will gradually make this transition. He said the move might take time as aircraft need timely maintenance.
“With this most recent development, we will look to recalibrate where we send our aircraft, reduce the amount that we are sending to Turkiye and send it to other places. But that does take some time because aircraft have to be maintained… we are cognisant of recent developments and we will look to adjust our plans," he added.
Earlier, on May 15, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) revoked the security clearance for the Turkish company, Celebi Airport Services India Pvt Ltd, in the “interest of national security".
Turkey had openly supported Pakistan and supplied it with weapons during the latter’s military engagement with India. Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan met with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to express Turkey’s support, saying that the Indian strikes were an unprovoked violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.
Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif also thanked his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his support during the hostilities with India.
