Air Quality in several cities in north India deteriorated in the month of October, where they recorded air quality in the ‘very poor’ category, indicating a respiratory health emergency in the region. According to the latest data by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Greater Noida, Delhi, Faridabad and Muzaffarnagar were among the cities with the worst air quality in India amid the advent of the winter season and stubble burning by farmers.  

On Monday, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) crossed the 300 mark and reached the ‘very poor’ category. The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) recorded an AQI of 306 at Kartavya Path while Noida recorded an AQI of 290. 

Several other cities recorded AQIs in ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’ categories such as Greater Noida recorded an AQI of 354, Uttar Pradesh's Faridabad of 322, Delhi 313, Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar of 299, Haryana's Bahadurgarh of 284, Manesar of 280, Kurukshetra of 256, Gurugram of 255 and Rajasthan's Bharatpur and Bhiwadi recorded an AQI of 261.

Delhi's Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that the increase in area pollution was due to advent of the winter season and a decrease in the speed of wind in the region. He stated that the particulates are staying at the ground, trapped in the atmosphere. 

Delhi government has implemented the second phase of GRAP and a meeting has been called with all the concerned departments to discuss the execution of the plan against rising air pollution that has caused a health emergency in the metropolitan cities.
