In a bid to ramp up security, major airports of India, including Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport, will have a dedicated anti-drone system. Acting on directives from the Union Home and Civil Aviation Ministries, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is making efforts to complete this task promptly. Through this, the Civil Aviation Ministry aims to make top 10 largest airports of the country drone-proof by the end of 2026.
According to sources quoted by Jagran.com, major airports like Delhi and Mumbai already have some basic-level systems, but with this new overhaul, a dedicated anti-drone system will be installed. A thorough study is set to be conducted to look at the viable places where the system can be installed. Additionally, discussions are currently underway on the specific componenting of these systems based on the requirements of different airports.
Currently, anti-drone systems are studied which are installed in different airports across the world. The procurement process will begin once the specific requirements are determined.
What Is An Anti-Drone System?
An anti-drone system is a technology that detects, tracks, and neutralises or mitigates threats from unauthorised drones. These systems protect sensitive areas by combining various technologies like radar, cameras, and radio frequency sensors to monitor airspace.
Upon successful detection, these systems use a host of countermeasure manoeuvres such as jamming, cyber takeover to disable the drone. The system also includes acoustic sensors that can detect the sound of the propellers of these drones.
The system also comes fitted with a detection software that helps it to differentiate whether the approaching object is a drone, a bird or an aircraft. Post detection it continuously tracks the speed, direction and location of the object to chalk out a strategic path as well as monitor the object.

AAI Bans Flying Of Drones Near IGI
In a separate development, the Airport Authority of India has banned the flying of drones within a 5-km radius of the IGI Airport. The rule also includes the runway, terminal and the surrounding areas.
If someone wishes to fly a drone anywhere else in Delhi, proper permissions are required from the AAI.
