Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday appointed the party’s senior leader Ajay Maken as the Treasurer of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), with immediate effect. The position was previously held by party leader Pawan Bansal.

"Congress president has appointed Ajay Maken as the treasurer of the All India Congress Committee, with immediate effect," party general secretary K C Venugopal said in a statement.

The move came ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Ajay Maken is a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and he has earlier served as a minister in former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh's cabinet. He held ministerial roles in the Cabinet of former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

Pawan Bansal was appointed as interim Treasurer in November 2020 following the death of Ahmed Patel. The grand old party appreciated the contribution of the outgoing treasurer in a statement. Maken was nominated to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) by party chief Kharge in August this year. The move came ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
