A farmer's quip invoking Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Aloo Se Sona' remarks during an event in Rajasthan's Banswara left Prime Minister Narendra Modi in splits on Thursday.
The farmer took a jibe at Gandhi while PM Modi was interacting with beneficiaries of the PM-KUSUM scheme, the Central government's initiative to promote solar energy in farming.
The event was attended by the farmers of several states, including Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. During the interaction, one farmer praised the scheme, saying that his long-cherished dream was fulfilled through the solar plant installation.
While detailing the benefits of KUSUM, he said, "Main maanatahoon ki logon ne kaha ki aalu se sonahoga. Aalu se sona to nahinhualekinhamaareejameen se aapanesonahamenjaroor de diya." (People said potato will yield gold. I believe potato didn't yield gold, but my land did.)
The clip of the exchange was shared by BJP leader Amit Malviya with caption, "Prime Minister interacting with PM-KUSUM beneficiaries in Banswara. You just can’t miss the rustic sense of humour here."

The reference was easily understood by the audience and occupants of the stage alike. PM Modi burst in laughter with the farmer's quip.
The farmer also said that farmers are popularly known as 'Annadata' but by adopting solar, he has also become 'Urjadata' (Energy giver).

The 'aloo se sona' remark by Rahul Gandhi became the talk of social media in 2017 when he was apparently trying to target PM Modi's industrialisation push but ended up making a political mockery targeted at him instead.
The clip cropped out of Gandhi's address in UP, went viral despite Gandhi not making the unrealistic claim. PM Modi lauded the Banswara farmers for turning to solar energy and towards sustainable agriculture.
"Banswarakekisaanon ne suraj ki roshni se apne khet ki takdeerbadal di hai," he said. (Banswara farmers changed the fate of their lands through sun's light).
